Paul "Bear" Bryant was an American college football player and coach. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, and best known as the head coach of the University of Alabama football team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, from 1958 to 1982. During his 25-year tenure as Alabama's head coach, he amassed six national championships and 13 conference championships. Wooden footballs made by an inmate are sometimes called "Bear Bryant prison made footballs". Inmates at Alabama prisons who are assigned to or have access to the hobby craft shop can make the footballs. To participate in the program, inmates must have a clear record and maintain it. The footballs are hand painted with three coats of paint and a final coat of liquid glass. They are lightweight and can be given to family members or purchased by ADOC employees.
